[Solved] bowling for columbine by michael moore

Bowling for Columbine has been written, directed, produced, and narrated by Michael Moore who has used a number of techniques to produce a piece of work about Americas fascination with guns and violence. This documentary discovers the reasons for the Columbine High School massacre along with further actions of violence in America. Moore emphasises on the background of gun violence and captures some of the communities’ views of the massacre and other associated problems.

This film demonstrates the horror and tragedy of the real life experience that people went through during the massacre of Columbine High School. He takes us through the Columbine High School security cameras reminding us of the foolishness, cruelty and general stupidity behind much of America’s fascination with guns. The title “Bowling for Columbine” originates from the two students liable for the Columbine High School massacre, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. The two students were present at the Bowling Club early that morning at 6:00 a.

m as it was said that they had taken bowling class in place of physical education. Moore includes the idea of bowling as Michigan milita uses bowling pins as their target practice. He proposes ironically that bowling could have recreated this image of gun violence and thus implanting the idea and evident thoughts of the two boys responsible for this sickening attack. Away from the massacre of Columbine High School, Moore visits the North Country Bank of America as he receives his free gun when he opens up and account.

The film follows Moore as he goes to the bank, makes his deposit, fills out the forms and awaits the results of a background check before walking out of the bank carrying a brand new hunting gun. Just before leaving the bank, Moore jokingly asks “Do you think it’s a little dangerous handing out guns at a bank? ” And so they wonder why more than 11,000 Americans die each year from gun violence. Michael Moore uses many techniques in his film. During his film he uses both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds.

Moore is constantly adding commentary over the top of his work which helps the viewers to understand what is going on in the film. At some stages when there was a gun on the screen he would often add the sound of gun shots and shooting in the background which was effective as it gives you a feeling of what it was like and the sound they made. As the film continues on the song “What a Wonderful World” is played over the top of a series of images. These images were depressing as they had shown 200,000 civilians killed, American military killing 4 billion people of South East Asia and 5000 Chileans murdered.

After viewing these images it really makes you think, is it truly a ‘Wonderful’ world? Michael Moore uses a technique where he gradually builds up information, over loading you with all these disturbing statistics and evidence that you can’t take it anymore and it makes you feel upset. The information slowly gets to you as does his message of trying to persuading us that gun violence in America has gone to an extreme! Moore uses several techniques that makes us really think about what he is saying, making us wonder if gun violence in America has gone too far?

Is there a solution to their obsession with guns? This film reveals many types of conflict such as physical, emotional, societal and school conflict. These types of conflicts can result in much harm to humanity and their environment. The main type of conflict shown in this film is physical conflict which can be caused by many things, especially the media. The media is constantly providing bad scenes of gun violence so often that it makes it as though the viewer should be doing the same thing. The media drags the viewers in forcing them to copy what’s in the media.

Americans have encountered conflict by growing up with guns and violence as it is all around them making them think it is normal and alright to use one. As someone had said in an interview “I was brought up with guns and ever since I was taught how to use one, I did. ” Americans have been brought up with guns as they are constantly surrounding them either through war, movies, toys and celebrities, guns and violence is constantly there! As kids grow up they grow up with toy guns and violent video games. They soon become old enough to watch gun violence movies and then old enough to own their own gun.

After experiencing all this gun violence they then come to think it’s alright to use a gun but no one can stop them and tell them the right way because no one knows any better, they are all the same. This can lead to very uneventful situations. With everyone surrounded by guns and violence it can event in horrifying occurrences such as the massacre of Columbine High School and the attack of the World Trade Centre. The consequences of conflict can be very severe taking many people’s lives. Take the attack of the World Trade Centre for example.

The 19 hijackers and nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in this incident. This caused much harm to humanity and their environment. Was it necessary for such a big attack? The hijackers did not have the will to resolve their problem using violence as the answer. The film demonstrated how conflict can result in ultimate tragedies. It also emphasises the importance of recognising the conflict and having the ability to resolve it. The main perpetrators in the film were two young boys who held within them large amounts of anger and frustration with society, their life and themselves.

In their case, the conflict arose from the society and school environment but was fed through the constant affiliation with violent thoughts and plans which were said to have come from the media, society and violent past times. The boys encountered different types of conflict yet they did not have the will to resolve it, instead use it to create horror and sadness for those that surround them. It makes you wonder whether the laws and policies of the United States made this massacre that little more possible by having these items so easily obtainable for the boys.
